ACH Fraud Protection Tips
- Monitor accounts daily to catch unauthorized activity. Business accounts have one business day to return an ACH debit. Failing to return it within this time frame significantly reduces chances of recovering funds.
- Use dual control when possible.
-
One of the most common methods of ACH fraud today is employee impersonation. Be sure to make follow-up calls with phone numbers on file, when account/routing number changes are requested.
- Security tokens for all ACH users. These provide an extra layer of security by generating one-time passcodes at login.
- ACH limits are in place for additional protection. These can be adjusted as needed, by contacting our Operations department.
- Positive Pay is an additional tool to monitor check and ACH debit activity. A daily file is submitted to us with checks and/or ACH transactions initiated that day. Any activity not listed in that file will reject until reviewed by your organization the next morning.
- It is important to gather signatures and routing/account numbers on ACH Authorization Forms when originating collections or payments. Be sure to retain these for your records in case a transaction is disputed.
